6th~ Intermediate Sumi-e: Review bamboo strokes, practice animals, orchids, lillies.
7th~ Hobbit Holes: go over scale for models, groups sketch out design ideas, plan color schemes, begin making interiors.
8th~ Clay Sculpture, “Rodin’s Hands:” students build life-sized hands, then pose and add texture. Don’t forget that it’s the independent study in-class work day on Thursday! Bring yours in if you want to receive credit. All independent studies are due next Thursday.
Lower Campus News
After finishing two collaborative projects (the wall hanging for the auction and a giant race track drawing), the first graders have been working on making colorful yarn “ojos.” They learned tying and how to make a square knot. Second grade has been diligently working on their pinatas for the auction– check them out this weekend at Spring Fling! Third grade just finished glazing their tiles; look for those to come home Friday. They are now working on coil cups. The fourth graders have been doing miniature loom weavings and finishing up their wall-hanging for the auction.
U.C. Projects: week of 4/21
I am going to try out a few different ways to use the blog to keep folks posted on what’s going on in art. Please bear with me on this, as there may be a few changes as the year plays out.
Below you’ll find a list of current projects going on at Upper Campus by grade. The due dates are rather flexible and depend on how fast the classes seem to proceed with the work (except the independent study in 8th grade) so I am not listing them.
5th~ Introduction to Sumi-e: a unit introducing traditional techniques for brush and ink.
6th~ Just finishing up the mosaics for the auction, and beginning Intermediate Sumi-e.
7th~ 5th period: Finishing up the “Hybrids” stuffed animal project. This is the second half of the intermediate sewing unit where kids reconfigure stuffed toys into new hybrid toys. They discussed found objects and the concept of the “ready-made” briefly, and practiced sewing skills we learned earlier.
7th~ 7th period: Finishing up the clay sculpture unit on animals. This week they will go in for the final firing.
We will be starting a unit in conjunction with Ms. Pamela on hobbit holes next week, so please feel free to be collecting materials to use in “interior decoration” or model landscaping.
8th~ During the independent studies, we will be doing some quick mini-projects. We have finished up experimental marbling and are doing a short felt/sewing project.
That’s all for now!

Monday Media: Session 2!
This Monday, the first after break, kicked off the second session of Monday Media Club. We have a large group this time, so we’ll have to get good at juggling. We will be running iStopmotion on five computers, and Garageband, iPhoto (our only photo editing program for now), and iMovie on all the rest. We will be taking a look at Logic Express, a more powerful digital sound program, as well as drawing from Soundtrack Pro for new sounds. We are going to do three sessions where we record live intstruments, so be ready to record!
Youtube of the week:
Lasse Gerjtsen’s “Hyperactive”– it’s all done just with the built in mic, camera, and edits, 2006.
Monday Media News, part 1
So here’s the first update for Monday Media on the new blog. We only have one last meeting for this session of Monday Media– time to finish up those projects! The last date of the session is 04.07.08. I will be sending out sign-up sheets again for anyone who’d like to do the next six weeks– make sure you let me know if you wanted a spot but didn’t get a chance last time (email is best), or if you just really, really, really need a spot. Also, we shared some cool links to good animation sites in the media elective. I’d like to post these for everyone to enjoy very soon, but in the meantime, check out the claymations made by Alex F. in 5th grade by searching “iguys” on youtube, or following this link:“iguys” Yay!
Archway Art Has a Blog!
Hi! This blog is all about art at Archway School, from student projects, assignment updates and interesting articles to links from the art world and beyond. Ms. Kelly would love to share what’s going on in the art program and to offer little windows for other art lovers to peek into.
