Please feel free to contact me– I’d love to hear from you all.

Another week almost gone?

Hi, everyone.  Time is flying as we head through May!  A couple of general announcements:

1. 8th Grade- After their big trip, they will be presenting their independent studies as well as finishing off their hand sculptures.

2. We need old shoes! Anyone able to donate any sort of old shoe should send them in for a project coming up in a week or so.

3. We can start to look forward to the end of the year gatherings for showing off our art! The upper campus will be having Art-Poetry-Music night on Thursday, June 5th.  The lower campus art will be up for portfolio day on Friday, June 6th.  Look for invitations with details coming home with your student soon!

4. Monday Media: we have two more regular sessions to go, with a make-up day that looks like it will be our presentation day.  Look for a paper note about that next Monday.

Week of May 5th

Hi, everyone! Thanks so much for all the fun and support at the auction this weekend.  It was great to talk to parents and see all the amazing contributions to our fundraising program. I am already excited about projects we can do for next year’s auction!

Upper campus update:  We are currently continuing to finish up last week’s projects. The 8th graders who chose to do the second independent study can bring them in this Thursday (05.09.08), but we decided to do the presentations after the D.C. trip in order to get in more time with the clay.  If students need to bring them in after the trip, that’s fine as well.

Monday Media update: This week we started recording live instruments.  We had an electric guitar, a midi-controlled synth, and an effects processor set up so that all the players and the engineer could listen through headphones while we recorded.  Look for some edits from the session to be posted next week.  This week’s Youtube share comes from a Mixlab alum, who caught the animation bug here at Archway and took it with her into high school (thanks, Merrits!).  http://www.youtube.com/v/PXTVCsNZYPg&hl=en

Week of April 28

Upper Campus Projects:

5th~ Final Sumi-e compositions: design “chop” stamp to sign pictures, mount for display.

6th~ Intermediate Sumi-e: Review bamboo strokes, practice animals, orchids, lillies.

7th~ Hobbit Holes: go over scale for models, groups sketch out design ideas, plan color schemes, begin making interiors.

8th~ Clay Sculpture, “Rodin’s Hands:” students build life-sized hands, then pose and add texture. Don’t forget that it’s the independent study in-class work day on Thursday! Bring yours in if you want to receive credit.  All independent studies are due next Thursday.

Lower Campus News

After finishing two collaborative projects (the wall hanging for the auction and a giant race track drawing), the first graders have been working on making colorful yarn “ojos.” They learned tying and how to make a square knot.  Second grade has been diligently working on their pinatas for the auction– check them out this weekend at Spring Fling!  Third grade just finished glazing their tiles; look for those to come home Friday.  They are now working on coil cups.  The fourth graders have been doing miniature loom weavings and finishing up their wall-hanging for the auction.

U.C. Projects: week of 4/21

I am going to try out a few different ways to use the blog to keep folks posted on what’s going on in art. Please bear with me on this, as there may be a few changes as the year plays out.

Below you’ll find a list of current projects going on at Upper Campus by grade.  The due dates are rather flexible and depend on how fast the classes seem to proceed with the work (except the independent study in 8th grade) so I am not listing them.

5th~ Introduction to Sumi-e: a unit introducing traditional techniques for brush and ink.

6th~ Just finishing up the mosaics for the auction, and beginning Intermediate Sumi-e.

7th~ 5th period: Finishing up the “Hybrids” stuffed animal project.  This is the second half of the intermediate sewing unit where kids reconfigure stuffed toys into new hybrid toys.  They discussed found objects and the concept of the “ready-made” briefly, and practiced sewing skills we learned earlier.

7th~ 7th period: Finishing up the clay sculpture unit on animals.  This week they will go in for the final firing.

We will be starting a unit in conjunction with Ms. Pamela on hobbit holes next week, so please feel free to be collecting materials to use in “interior decoration” or model landscaping.

8th~ During the independent studies, we will be doing some quick mini-projects.  We have finished up experimental marbling and are doing a short felt/sewing project.

That’s all for now!
